Visit Tuscany From Florence

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, the Val d’Orcia area is in the South of Siena. Redesigned and developed back in the XIII- XIV century, the Val D’Orcia was said to represent and reflect three key principles of the ideal government of the Republic of Siena: functionality, order and beauty. Its elegance and distinctive features like the clay soil, the walled towns on the top of hills, and the isolated farms and abbeys have inspired many artists during the centuries. That is why the Val d’Orcia is considered one of the most fascinating countrysides in all of Tuscany.

The Valley was always a great economic resource because the ancient Roman Via Cassia crossed through it, which was once the main road to go to Rome, passing through the little town of Radicofani, Castiglione D’Orcia, San Quirico, Pienza and Montepulciano. Many pilgrims and merchants stopped in the towns of the Val D’Orcia on their way to Rome bringing innovation, culture and…money! But no doubt about it, another great attraction of the Val D’Orcia is the fantastic local products, like the wines or the world-famous Pecorino cheeses. The most important wine produced here is the Brunello di Monatlcino, which is considered one of the best wines produced in Italy.

It’s a red wine made with a kind of Sangiovese grape, perfected due to its aging process. It obtained the DOCG certification and can now only be produced just in and around Montalcino. The young version of Brunello is the Rosso di Montalcino, and there is another famous wine of the Val d’Orcia area called the Nobile di Monepulciano. And if you match this red wine with the Pienza Pecorino cheese, one of the oldest cheeses in the world, your experience of taste and flavor will be memorable.

Montepulciano
After 2 hours of driving in a private van, we’ll reach Montepulciano, a picturesque town, which was the setting of the famous movie Twilight. Located at the top of a hill, it’s renowned for its beautiful Medieval and Renaissance buildings and little shops selling local products. The best way to discover the town is by taking a nice walk in the center, to stretch out our legs as well, and we can do this by starting from the main square, Piazza Grande. We’ll wander through the streets, enjoying a delicious cappuccino in a traditional cafe, the beautiful artisan shops and little wine cellars.

Pienza
After Montalcino, we’ll continue for a cheese tasting! The famous Pecorino cheese is a must here!! Just before lunch, we’ll take a walk around Pienza, the town considered the perfect example of Renaissance order and the result of a Pope’s vision!! As a matter of fact, it was the ideal town rebuilt under the order of the Pope Pio II. It’s really small, but remarkable and charming for its Renaissance square and its romantic little streets. Our lunch will be in the countryside, on a farm where they’ll let us taste their local products, food, and wine!!
3
Montalcino
Our last stop will be in the town of Montalcino, where the famous Brunello is produced! But Montalcino is not just about its wine. The town is also rich in art and history. It’s a little medieval village, where we can enjoy a breathtaking view from the Val d’Orcia valley. We’ll take a walk through the Castle of Montalcino until reaching the center of the town. What a better way to end our day than with a glass of Brunello wine just before coming back to Florence!!
