06 Nov Tortelli Mugellani- a traditional dish from the Countryside
Let’s falling in love with the Tortelli!
Today we are looking to rediscover traditions.
If you’re a food lover in Italy and in Tuscany, try to find the real traditional dishes, which are part of the history and the culture of a place!
Just outside Florence, a few kilometers from the capital of Tuscany, you can find the charming hills of Mugello (read the article to discover more), on the way to the Appenini mountains.
This is also the land where the Tortelli are made and produced!
The tortelli it’s a filled pasta. They have a square shape, like ravioli, but they’re bigger! The tortelli of Mugello or tortelli mugellani, are different from others because the inside, the stuffing, it’s made with potatoes.
They are usually served with wild boar sauce or butter and sausage (our favourite!)
It was born as a poor dish but It’s really simple and really tasty!
The tortelli Mugellani are mentioned since the Renaissance, the XV Century. Luigi Pulci, a poet of the time of Lorenzo il Magnifico, celebrated them in a poem.
Of course at that time, the stuffing was not made with potatoes, (they arrived here with the discovery of America), but with chestnut. It was From the XIX century that we started to substitute potatoes.

The best way to taste the tortelli is during a sagra. What’s a sagra? A local festival, dedicated often to some specific food: the sagra of wild boar, the sagra of the mushrooms, the sagra of the new extra virgin olive oil, the sagra of the pecorino cheese etc..
It could be very fun and unique, just local people go there. The setting it’s really familiar and the food divine!!! You can find a sagra in different periods during the year. They are organized in the main town of the Mugello like Scarperia, Barberino, Borgo san Lorenzo, Valeri- Scarperia.
This traditional Bar Pizzeria has a very simple and modest location. But the tortelli here are amazing, abundant and cheap!!

This is a more formal restaurant, but the tortelli are made everyday by women chef!
Excellent taste especially with meat sauce!
