Sweet Florence- each season has its own cake to taste!

Florence sweet Florence

Do Florentine people have a sweet tooth? Yes they do!!! That’s why each season has its own cake to taste!!
The particular aspect of the Florentine cakes is the fact that they are prepared with simple and natural ingredients.

Wintertime

Schiacciata alla fiorentina
Typical of the period of carnival, between January and February this Schiacciata is the protagonist of the main bakeries in Florence.

It’s a soft cake, covered with powdered sugar on top with the image of the lily of Florence made with chocolate powder, too! It could be filled with cream or whipped cream for those with a really, really sweet tooth!!

Springtime

Pan di Ramerino
It’s a very ancient traditional cake that has been made since the Middle Ages! It’s eaten usually close to Easter time! It’s made with bread, eggs, milk, grapes and rosemary. It has the shape of a little piece of bread!

Summertime

Zuccotto fiorentino
It’s an ice cream cake and according to the legend, the architect Buontalenti invented it (we consider him the inventor of the gelato, also). It’s soft and made with sponge cake.

Autumn

Schiacciata con l’uva
The real main protagonist here is the grape!!

Tuscany is famous for its wine, but we also use grapes to cook with, and this cake is really special! It’s made with black grapes (even better if it’s the canaiolo varietal), bread, olive oil and sugar. It’s usually eaten during the harvest period.

Castagnaccio
It’s probably one of the main Tuscan cakes, made with chestnut flour, pine nuts, raisins and rosemary.

Buon appetito and ask us more about food, we are real foody!
